We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

This is Poppy (5 years old) and Jasmine (3 years old). They lost their
mummy, my dear wonderful friend, Maggie to cancer 3 weeks ago. Maggie was
diagnosed with bowel cancer 5 weeks after Jasmine was born in February
2007. In September 2007 she was told she was terminal and that she only had 12 weeks to live. The fact that Maggie survived as long as she did was nothing short of a miracle. She travelled all over the UK, to Germany and even Australia to get treatment to prolong her life. Maggie’s own words were “There is no bravery here from me, it is the fear of not seeing my children grow up which pushes me every single second of every day to continue, no matter how difficult things may seem.
I want our girls to know that mummy never gave up and continued to fight
this disease in every way she could.”

In between being a full time mummy and fighting cancer, Maggie still managed to participate in Race for Life events for the last several years – once even with her chemo pump on! She believed that if it wasn’t for charities like Cancer Research UK she would have not survived to see Jasmine’s first few birthdays or Poppy's first day at school for which she was so grateful.

Maggie was one of the funniest women I’ve ever met. No matter what life threw at her she knew how to make the best of a bad situation. She was a wonderful friend and I miss her. She was taken too soon from her girls and her devoted husband Stephen. This year I will run Race for Life for Maggie and all the other mothers who have been taken too soon from their families.
