Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Ed and I were both pupils at Surbiton Grammar School, although I was 6 years older.   At 11, Ed was aware of me through watching the school rugby team play.   In 1966 I played against Hendaye Rugby Club on tour in the south of France.   Six years later Ed captained the school against Hendaye.

From 1983 to 1998 we found ourselves as teaching colleagues in Merton.   During that time we shared many professional and family activities, including cycling, school trips and skiing.

Our friendship developed with a mutual interest in cycling, myself as an amateur racing cyclist, and Ed joining me on school trips, mountain biking with pupils and increasingly enjoying cycling for its own sake.

One of the most memorable trips was a 3-day ride along the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne with Ed and his son Andrew.

Ed was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in September 2013 and died 18 months later.   It is a cruel and debilitating illness, for which there is currently no cure.

Since Ed died in 2015 I have wanted to do something in his memory which will hopefully raise awareness of MND and raise a significant amount of money for research into a cure.

My plan was to ride the 'Raid Pyrenean Cerbere to Hendaye' - a 450mile ride in 7 days - and I did it!!

My last words to Ed were "I'm doing it for both of us now".  This ride has helped me to fulfill that goal.
