Update - Thank you very much to those that have contributed to Ravelrig RDA as a result of my insane decision to complete Tough Mudder 2013. Some thought I would find it just like Royal Marines training but there was one major difference - 32 years! Thanks to Ross (Heatly) and Ewan Duncan for completing it with me and dragging me round, to Niall Duncan for adding atmosphere (he played the bagpipes all day Saturday and Sunday, and thanks to Paul Simcox, friend and former RM colleague who works for Tough Mudder and encouraged me to do it (in fact I think I'll now add the word 'former' before the word 'friend'! So thanks again to those who contributed, and for those that didn't, there's still time!
The original bit - Craig, our autistic son, has been riding at Ravelrig RDA since we moved to Balerno in 2006. The volunteers are wonderful and he continues to enjoy the immensely beneficial experiences.
Ravelrig RDA lose a lot of riding time through poor weather and, having recently been gifted the land and gained planning permission, are currently raising funds to build a new indoor training arena. This fundraising is in addition to the considerable routine running costs.
Ravelrig RDA benefits from the time and effort of our wonderful organiser, Barbara Johnstone whose years of dedication have been recognised nationally with the award of an MBE, and within Edinburgh with the prestigeous 'Inspiring Volunteer of the Year Award' 2012. They have some 10 ponies, about 100 disabled riders and over 70 volunteers. Ross and James spent a number of years volunteering - their experiences of working as a team and with those less fortunate than themselves has been invaluable, perhaps even more beneficial than for Craig.
I'm raising money to help the organisation that has given so much to our family.
