Story

On Sunday 7 October 2018 I will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon and this year I want to raise money for Maggie's.

Geraint has been working with the charity for several years to help them raise the funding to build a Maggie's centre in the grounds of Velindre Hospital in Cardiff. Work on this project has just started but fundraising is needed to run the Centre once it is completed.

If you haven't heard of Maggie's, it was set up by Maggie Keswick Jencks who lived with advanced cancer for 18 months. She and her husband Charles believed that in order to live more positively with cancer you needed information that would allow you to be an informed participant in your medical treatment, stress-reducing strategies, psychological support and the opportunity to meet other people in similar circumstances in a relaxed domestic atmosphere.

The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996. They are warm and welcoming places built alongside NHS hospitals that provide the emotional, practical and social support that people with cancer and their family and friends need.

A Maggie’s centre:

is place where you can come and talk about yourself as a
person, rather than a patient’

‘helps people to bear the unbearableness of their cancer
diagnosis’
