Story

WE DID IT!!! A week today we finished our epic trek over 4 days. We took a different route than planned which was the Ancascocha route which is less trekked and very un-populated, much more challenging but we were rewarded with the most amazing scenery. We we walking 93,000 steps over 40miles enduring 41 hours of walking which included 2800 metres of climbing and 3000 metres of descent with 3 of the 4 days trekking at altitude up to the highest point of 4600 metres.... all to each the breath taking Machu Picchu.

It was hard going not only for the fitness needed but with my vertigo and motion sickness the tiny narrow paths high up on the sides of the mountains really pushed me to my limits. My love of camping is well documented (I hate it really) so camping at minus 10 was certainly challenging. Never have I valued being able to walk from your bed to the bathroom without having to pull on boots, head torch and get even more clothes on than you were already sleeping in!

Our team were amazing, the other trekkers a joy and the guides awesome. The food they prepared was unreal, up the side of a mountain miles from anywhere was fabulous.  The camaraderie was so needed and made the trek even more special learning about everyone else too and why they were here.

There were literally highs and lows throughout our trek, tears, hugs and loads of laughter. My dear friend Sam asked me to do this trek for her before she passed away last year from cancer. It was one she dearly hoped we could have done together but I know she was with me, keeping me safe, holding my hand and giving me a shove when needed up the steep steps.

Since Sam passed we lost two more lovely ladies, Monica my honorary mother-in-law and Gina, one of my oldest friends both from cancer.

We have been fundraising for 15 years now for Cancer Research UK after the loss of my cousin Tracie aged just 32 from cancer and have seen other family lost but equally surviving from this dreadful disease.

I will continue to fund raise in the hope that one day we will have more of our loved ones surviving than lost to cancer.

Our challenge has raised £21,000 which means our new GRAND TOTAL to date is now a whopping £122,000. Please support us and Cancer Research UK as every penny can and does make a difference.

Thank you,

Rachel & Simon x
