Many of you may know I lost my brother in a tragic accident many years ago. As a young child I realised life was so precious and can be cut short in a blink of an eye. I read about the work 2 wish upon a star do and it really touched me. They provide training for the emergency services to deal with such a tragic event, family counselling and keepsake boxes. Knowing this charity is proving such vital support to families who are going through the most tragic circumstances has really touched me and given me the drive to push myself to do something which will really benefit those in need. Each keepsake box cost £49, this box contains a hand print, foot print, a box to keep a lock of hair in, a teddy for the family and the child and much more, my family didn’t have a box like this and during such a horrible time it wouldn’t be something you’d naturally think of, so to raise money to give one of these boxes is a real motivation for me.
“2 Wish Upon a Star provides immediate and ongoing bereavement support to families throughout Wales who have been affected by the sudden and traumatic loss of a child or young adult aged 25 or under.
In 2012, our founder and CEO Rhian tragically lost her one year old son George after he suddenly fell ill at home, the hospital staff did all they could but were sadly unable to save George’s life. The staff were not equipped to deal with such sudden loss and the hospital itself did not have adequate bereavement facilities available.
Rhian and her husband Paul left the hospital with no support or information. No one called or offered them support, this played an inevitable part in the events that followed.
Just five days after the loss of their son, Paul was unable to cope with his feelings of grief and took his own life.
Following this second loss, Rhian and her family still received no support.
From fundraising at her kitchen table to becoming a national charity with working partnerships with each health board, police force and fire service, 2 Wish Upon a Star ensures each family who have been affected by the sudden loss of a child receive the support they deserve.
Since 2012, 2 Wish Upon a Star have supported 446 families – and this number is growing each day.
This number is not a statistic, it is 446 young lives lost tragically and 446 families who have been changed forever.
2 Wish Upon a Star received no government funding and rely entirely on the support of fundraisers who provide vital funds to enable the charity to continue it’s vital work.”
