Story
On the first weekend of of June 2017 (weather permitting) 10 members of Market Rasen RoundTable will be attempting to row the English Channel.
Only one member has any previous rowing experience…...and to be honest until we decided to do this none of us were very fit either!
Since the French Authorities closed the main Dover to Calais rowing route to ‘man powered’craft in 2013, the traditional 21 mile/5 hour row across the Channel – used by many teams to raise charity funding - is prohibited.
However Fundraisers and Adventure rowers can still ‘Row the Channel’ – either out from Dover to the middle and back; or take a route from Nieuwpoort, Belgium to Ramsgate on the English
coast. Out half way and back didn’t seem like crossing the channel so we decided that the Nieuwpoort crossing was a better idea…….Then we found out the Nieuwpoort row is around 55 miles of hard rowing in open sea and to our knowledge only around 5 other crews have
completed this challenge. Oh well we like a challenge!!
We will need to train and plan for 12- 15 hours hard work – it’s a dawn to dusk day. The crew of
10, will require fitness and good rowing technique to successfully overcome the challenges of
big seas and hard rowing.
Training: In the four months leading up to the crossing, training will include sessions in the gym, running and swimming in Lincolnshire and we will be travelling to Portsmouth to train onthe water at Langstone adventure rowing.
