In 2015 I met Zoe Crowson and her daughter through a friend. Zoe's daughter Phoebe is a wonderful young girl who has a debilitating genetic condition which leaves her in constant pain and just hearing the horrific description of RDEB and what Phoebe goes through each day brought me to tears - a little girl whose skin blisters to the equivalent of 3rd degree burns on a daily basis and has to travel to a specialist hospital unit every few months to have her throat stretched open because of internal blistering.

There is no cure for RDEB, but Zoe started a charity to help fund research into a cure so that not only her own daughter would benefit but all children with RDEB. There is real hope that a cure can be found and developed, but the researchers need funding to carry out their work.

This year in order to raise funds myself and a group of colleagues who were similarly touched by Zoe's story are putting ourselves through 20 miles of tough off-road running with some 200 obstacles. The blisters and aching muscles we are likely to acquire are nothing compared to what Phoebe and many other children with the same condition go through every day of their lives, but we'll be drawing inspiration from the way these remarkable young people tackle the challenges life presents.
