Shannon Trust supports thousands of people in prison each year to learn to read and improve their numeracy skills. Currently, over 70% of people in prison struggle with reading and numeracy. Many cannot read at all. Learning reduces re-offending, and creates stronger, safer, communities for all.

Story

Imagine if you couldn't read. Imagine the difficulties and emotions. For thousands of men and women in prison, this is the reality. Nearly 50% of people in prison have a literacy level at or below what's needed for successful employment; many can't read at all. Not being able to read in prison reduces access to education, training and rehabilitation programmes, and on release reduces the chances of a different life. Shannon Trust is breaking the cycle of non-reading by supporting thousands of prisoners each year to unlock the power of reading with the help of a prisoner mentor.
