My very good friend, Gordon, and I are planning to race across the Isles of Scilly in a challenging event. We will be navigating the 37km course on the 10th June, along with a few other crazy adventurous types. The race involves 29km of trail running and 8km of ocean swimming, split into 8 runs and 7 swims. We essentially swim between the islands and then run over the island, so we will be running in our wetsuits and swimming in our trainers as there's no time to change; oh, and we will be tied together by a bungee cord!
So, why have we decided to do this? Originally we thought it would be a great way to test ourselves physically and mentally, however, recent events have changed our focus.
In August 2017 my lovely mum, Louise, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at just 63 years old. It had been silently growing for a while and the first she knew was when Dr Medley told her that she had cancer in the lung, abdomen and bones. With this horrendous diagnosis mum fought as hard as she could to stop the spread and prolong life, but she was too late. Immunotherapy didn't work, and sadly on 5th January 2018 mum lost her fight to cancer. As I watched her suffer, without complaining, I was struck by how indiscriminate the illness is and how helpless we are.
Gordon also lost his mum to cancer, so has also experienced this awful disease.
So, we have decided to race in honour of their extraordinary bravery in the face of this cruel illness, and also raise money for Rowcroft Hospice. Louise (my mum) was in Rowcroft for 7 days before she passed away; however, their community team had been helping mum in the months prior. The care, support and kindness we experienced was simply incredible, so I would like to give something back.
Our journey to the start line will be tough, mentally and physically. Training will be gruelling, but knowing that we are raising money for a good cause will drive us forward. We will be inspired by the courage and dignity shown by our mum’s during their own battle with cancer.
So please dig deep and donate now. We are self-funding the race, so all money raised here goes directly to Rowcroft Hospice.
