Tractor Drive from John O'Groat's to Lands End · 11 June 2016

Meningitis is deadly; killing and seriously disabling in hours. Small children and young adults are high risk, but all ages can be affected. Globally 1,000 people die daily. We fundraise to invest in research, campaign for vaccines, provide symptom information and support those already affected.

Story

Our story takes us back to October 2014 when Darcey (our 2 year old girl) contracted Meningitis. Darcey became very poorly within a matter of hours. First signs were a sore throat, headache and runny nose. We called the Dr's surgery to get advice and waited for a Dr to call. An hour passed and still no call. Darcey was getting less responsive and we decided that the best option was to take her to A&E straight away. A journey that normally takes 25 minutes seemed to take hours. On route Darcey became more vacant with a glazed look in her eyes. She vomited a couple of times but, no sign of a rash yet. We arrived at A&E and went straight through. Dr's immediately started to work on Darcey and we just stood by the hospital bed, watching our little girl, limp and very poorly. We felt so helpless. The Dr's were very good, they sat us down and said those dreaded words, 'she has meningitis', we both felt numb. She started to develop the rash but only a few, the antibiotics started to take effect and they disappeared. After hours of lumbar punctures, IV antibiotics and care she started to perk up. We stayed in hospital for 1 week during her recovery and by the end of the week she was almost Darcey again. The Dr's said if we had left it an hour or two longer, it may have been different story. We feel very lucky that Darcey made a full recovery and thank all the Dr's and Nurses for their support throughout. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered loss and throughout this journey we have learned that many others have in fact suffered because of this disease. For this reason we are organising the tractor drive to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation and contribute to raising awareness along the way.We can make a difference.........thank you for your support in order to raise as much money for this charity as we possibly can we are organising a tractor drive from John O'Groats to LandsEnd. A team of three drivers, Ryan, Simon & James will be taking turns to drive the tractor with the support vehicle hot on their heels. We hope to raise Meningitis awareness on route as well as donations and will have sponsor stickers on the tractors and support vehicle. These sponsors will make donations to the charity as well. It all goes to The Meningitis Research Foundation! This illness effects so many people, we really hope that the money we raise supports research into the disease as well as after care for those who have suffered loss.
