Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am raising this money to really make a difference to the work that St Raphael's Hospice does.

On the 20th Febuary I will be doing a tandem skydive at Norwich airfield. My boyfriend Paul will also be jumping.

On the 16th January I will be holding a charity music night at Club Uniquity, Dules Head, Somerleyton. There will be live bands a big prize raffle. Ticket entry is £5.00.

St Raphael's Hospice needs to raise over £2.5 million pound every year from charitable fundraising, donations and legacies and this is done through organised events from the Hospice and projects such as this.
Why does this mean so much to me?
St Raphael's Hospice cared for my Mum (Diane Barwick). My Mum had terminal lung cancer and after 3 attempts of Chemotherapy she decided that enough was enough and wanted to live the last part of her life without too much medical intervention. This choice was not made lightly but we supported her decision as a family. Mum went to St Raphael's as a day patient first, visiting the day centre and meeting other patients and staff. Mum loved going there. She had massages, her nails done, listened to music and got to talk openly and honestly about anything that concerned her about her treatment (and anything else she wanted to share). As Mum deteriorated they invited her to stay for a week. They wanted to manage her pain and give Dad a short rest. Mum didn't come home after that week and her life ended three weeks later on 29th March 2007. During those few weeks I have never met anyone like the staff that I met there. I cannot begin to describe the compassion and care that the staff gave so freely every day. There was never a moment when they couldn't stop to talk. Mums room was decorated and lovely, she had a patio and an en-suite. Mum said she had been in worse hotels. Everything was a choice. She had her laptop plugged in and could eat anything that she wanted (within reason; apparently fillet steak was a little over ambitious).  There was a chapel and staff on hand to prey with you if that was your request. In fact Mum found a peacefulness in prayer and even chose a prayer to be read at her funeral. I stayed overnight and they made me very comfortable. It was during those nights that I saw the extent of their commitment to the patients. They would sit with Mum, for an hour at a time sometimes until she was able to sleep or was rested. This commitment is admirable and makes everyone there so special.

Please give as much as you can to help me to raise the £1000,00 that I have committed to raising by the 11th March 2010.

Thank you once again for taking the time to read this far.
With my love

Rebecca Barwick
