Addis to Gimbie bike ride for Maternity Worldwide · 26 February 2010

Maternity Worldwide has a vision of a world in which all women and their babies are able to access safe and appropriate childbirth regardless of where they live. We exist to reduce mortality and injury associated with childbirth in Sub-Saharan Africa where the risk of dying in childbirth is highest.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

If you're reading this then hopefully you're about to contribute to my Ethiopian fundraising challenge, and I am immensely grateful for your generosity. In February, I'm cycling 350km in aid of Maternity Worldwide (www.maternityworldwide.org) from Addis Ababa to Gimbie, where the charity run a maternity hospital. Apparently the route is very hilly, and the cycling is for 5-6 hours a day, so it's a considerable challenge and my training should have started weeks ago! Oops.

Yes, I'm excited about the bike ride (buns of steel by the end of it, no doubt), but the money I raise - with your help - is going to a far greater cause than just sending me on an adventure. Saving mothers' lives is what I'm passionate about, and that is exactly what Maternity Worldwide are doing in Ethiopia. You all know that this is what I care most about, what I want to do with my life, and I can't wait to visit the hospital in Gimbie to see the amazing work your sponsorship money is contributing to. 1 in 16 women die as a result of pregnancy or childbirth in Africa, as compared to 1 in 4500 in the UK, and in parts of Ethiopia it is as high as 1 in 7.

Just £15 pays for a safe birth for one mother, and if I can persuade 100 people to donate that then I will reach my target. Any donation makes a difference though, and will be much appreciated.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now. Give generously and help make safe childbirth a reality for as many women as possible,

With huge thanks,

Becky x

p.s. The thought of me, red-faced and puffing, as I drag myself up all those Ethiopian hills, must be worth it, surely!
