The Road To Towton - Clifford Household · 18 March 2016
In 1461 England had its bloodiest battle in which over 28,000 died in less than 24 hours, the same battle Shakespear depicted a father having found he killed his son and a son having found he killed his father.
Although the battle was ultimately a Yorkist victory, soldiers died on both sides of the battlefield in England's deadliest conflict.
The 20th of March 2016 marks the 555th anniversary of the Battle of Towton and members of the Clifford Household will be participating in a 3-day march just under 50 miles from the Clifford stronghold at Skipton Castle all the way to Towton Battlefield in time for the remembrance day event.
Members of the Clifford household will be doing this march in 15th century clothing, arms and armour as well as carrying with them the supplies needed for the trek (food and water) over the Pennines to their destination... over this journey they'll be travelling an elevation of 3579 feet.
By comparison, this is 19 feet higher than Mount Snowden...
The reason for selecting the Battlefields Trust for this particular fundraiser is to see that battlefields such as Towton gain the protection they deserve for future generations to reflect upon.
Initially this page was created for the intention of raising funds for the Towton Battlefield Society however due to being unable to raise funds for them through JustGiving this has moved to the Battlefields Trust.
Should anyone wish to donate to the Towton Battlefield Society, please get in contact as this is primarily aimed towards raising funds for Towton Battlefield specifically:
