Reggheads Quiz · 14 December 2022

At DBAS UK we aim to deliver support, research and hope to the DBAS community in the UK by bringing families together, communicating the latest medical information and funding research into causes and treatments.

Story

The Reggheads quiz is to raise awareness of giving blood and raise funds for Diamond Blackfan Anaemia Support Group UK on behalf of Oliver.

Oliver has had a difficult start to life, he was born three months premature weighing less than a bag of sugar. As well as all the issues prematurity brings, he was also diagnosed with a virus called CMV, which resulted in hearing loss and calcifications on his brain. Oliver then underwent genetic testing, and has heartbreakingly been diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA).

DBA is an extremely rare genetic blood disorder affecting around 125 people in the UK. It is a bone marrow failure syndrome meaning Oliver is unable to produce any of his own red blood cells, the cells which transport oxygen around the body. He requires four weekly blood transfusions to keep him alive. To date, he has had 24 blood transfusions and has just turned 18 months old.

Despite all of this, Oliver is the strongest, most loving, happy  little boy and because of these transfusions, he is able to grow, flourish and reach mile stones many of us take for granted in our day to day lives.

Please, if you are healthy and able, consider donating blood. You are giving Oliver, and many others like him, the chance of a happy life. Without the generosity and kindness of blood donors, Oliver wouldn’t be here today. A single donation can save up to three lives.

By raising money for Diamond Blackfan Anaemia Support Group UK, you are helping to provide support for families affected by this rare condition and also to fund vital research to help find a cure.
