In memory of Dave Hannan

Story

My beloved dad, Dave Hannan, went to sleep for the last time on 30/11/2021, after a mercifully short illness with cancer, which caused him to get sepsis.

He spent most of his life volunteering, and was known for helping build and run CAMRA beer festivals, taking part in and leading Mountain Bothy Association working parties, and working and maintaining the locks and towpaths of local canals and waterways, especially the famous Marple locks flight — but he spent by far the longest time serving with Mountain Rescue.

For as long as I can remember (and then some), Dad would give up his weekends to search the hills for lost and injured folk in need of help and medical support, saving countless lives over the decades.

As well as scouring the mountains of the Peak District, he went to Lockerbie in 1988 to assist in looking for lost souls.

Just before he passed away, BMRT awarded him with an honorary lifetime membership of the team - his certificate now hangs on my wall with my own certificates.

I was and have been humbled by the kindness of BMRT members to me, even nearly 3 years after his death. At his funeral, their ambulance joined the procession, and their beautiful SAR dog came along with the sea of red coats to pay respects. They have assisted in finding good homes for some of his belongings, and have shared their memories of him with me, to help keep him alive.

He gave so much to BMRT over the years, and I would love for his legacy to go on supporting them.

Anything you can spare will enable BMRT to continue saving lives around the Peak District, his favourite stomping ground, and it would mean so much to us for him to leave this legacy.
