Story

Hello and thank you for visiting our JustGiving page in honour of our Dad; Graham Platten, aged 57.

Graham died on the 10th December 2009 having been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease earlier in the year. He was a loving husband, a proud father of 5 children, and he was also given the chance to be a proud Grandad to 3 grandchildren just before he passed away. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease and over 5,000 people in the UK are also fighting with MND each day.

You would never have known that Graham was suffering with his illness because he was so full of life and tried to continue with his everyday tasks, help people out, and experience life as much as he could without being defeated by the disability the disease was causing him.

Graham was a real inspiration to us all and a first class example of how you can still achieve so many things in life despite being restricted by illness and disability. He was a keen sportsman and has completed marathons and half marathons all over the world. Rhys and Christopher Platten have entered the 2010 Great North Run in honour of Graham and to raise money for the MND Association.

Graham was proactive in helping with research and was one of the first people to join the lithium trial in an attempt to delay the effects of the illness and prolong the quality of life. He enjoyed being involved with the trial and meeting other people that had also been diagnosed. As a family we are going to continue supporting the MND Association to raise money so that they can find a cure for this awful disease and support other families and carers going through what we went through.

The Motor Neurone Disease Association, MNDA, is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them.  It is their mission to fund and promote research to bring about an end to the illness. Until then they will do all that they can to enable everyone to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity whilst providing support for them and their loved ones.

With your help we can raise money to support the MNDA to fund research and support those who are sadly suffering from the illness like our Dad recently did. It is a traumatic experience and your money will really make a difference!
