Story

London Marathon

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Page.

I am taking part in the 2019 London Marathon to raise awareness of Brain Tumours. I will be dedicating my run to my late brother, Marco Bersella, who sadly lost his battle to cancer on the 7 September 2016.

At 48 years old in August 2013, Marco was misdiagnosed with Parkinson's disease. His symptom's were mimicking those of someone in early stages of the disease. His presenting history included frontal head pressure sensation but no headache, occasional dizziness with a change in personal behavior and motor tremors.

After going for a second opinion, it was discovered that Marco had an aggressive Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) a fast growing Gloma, which developed from an Anaplastic Astrocytoma (a rare malignant brain tumour) Marco was admitted to hospital under the guidance of Professor Alan Taylor, the head of Neurovascular Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. A mini pterional craniotomy to debulk the tumor was performed to remove as much of the tumour as possible.

Once Marco had recovered from the operation he went for Radiotherapy treatment, afterwhich he decided to take a more natural approach and in conjunction to treatment started taking CBD oil (95% THC) every evening before bed. He also changed his diet, lowering carbohydrates and focusing on more of a Ketogenic lifestyle. Marco went into remission and had some quality of life for just over two years after the initial diagnosis. He lived with and managed this disease, which had a general life expectancy of between 12 -18 months.

My brother showed character and courage throughout his illness, never complaining and remaining positive until the end. We watched a healthy man who always focused on being fit and strong, go from being an athlete, to becoming bed ridden within weeks of his passing. It shook our family and close friends and devastated all our lives. He was a loving and dedicated father to his two boys, Luca and Paolo and an inspiring and caring brother to me and my youngest brother, Nino Bersella. A loyal friend who would always seek to help and guide others. Far to young to go at 51 and sorely missed by all who loved him.

After 3 trips back and forth to Cape Town from London to support my brother through some tough times, I made a commitment to myself to never take life for granted and to do good in his memory. I wrote a few blogs on Health, Nutrition and lifestyle choices and focused on my family and things that I cared passionately about. I think that most of what I am doing today has been inspired by Marco. I really want to help people and think that getting a message across by doing something for a good cause will inspire and help others. Part of my journey is also in memory of people that are living with cancer and for those that have lost loved ones.

“With over 11,200 people receiving the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour each year in the UK alone, and over 5,000 losing their lives to this disease, donating and supporting a great chatity like The Brain Tumour Charity UK will in turn help researchers understand and treat brain tumours, and increase survival rates all over the world.
The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain tumours, making a difference every day to the lives of people with a brain tumour and their families.
