Richard Kirk London Marathon 2018

London Marathon 2018 · 22 April 2018 ·
So why have I chosen to run the London Marathon and support RBL?
The easy part in this is to explain why I'm supporting the Royal British Legion (RBL). RBL help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families all year round. RBL also campaign to improve their lives, organise the Poppy Appeal and remember the fallen.
This is a great opportunity to give something back and also undertake a personal challenge.
My journey to taking part began on a sunny autumn run in Doncaster. I was already looking for a challenge and had thought about the London Marathon but unfortunately by this time I had missed the ballot. As I ran down Bawtry Road I spotted someone who would trigger a chain of thoughts and get me to where I am today, taking part in the 2018 London Marathon on 22 April.
Over on the other side of the road I spotted Ben Parkinson. For those who don't know Ben, he is Britain's most badly injured surviving soldier. He was maimed when the Land Rover he was travelling in hit a mine in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. It was inspiring to see Ben tackling his injuries head on and truly embracing the RBL message of Live On.
Following this moment and after a number of phone calls and emails later, I was able to secure one of the RBL charity places for the 2018 London Marathon.
I've been training since November, albeit a few little injuries aside, it's going well. To support this I'm also signed up to complete the Coventry Half Marathon on 18th March and Sheffield Half Marathon on 8th April. For someone who has only ever ran in 10k's previously this is something of a step up!
So my commitment is to put in the long hours of training, come rain or shine, endure any aches and pains that come my, then ultimately cross the finish line on the Mall on Sunday 22nd April. I now need your support to did deep and sponsor me with whatever you can.
