My Grandfather was one of the first soldiers to be sent to France at the outbreak of the 1st World War. He served for the entire duration, fighting at Arras, Amiens and The Somme to name but a few. he survived being gassed in the trenches, but this eventually resulted in an early death just after I was born.
My Father joined the Royal Navy as a result of watching the survivors of Dunkirk come home in 1940. He went on to fight in The Battle of the Atlantic, the Russian convoys and was on the first ship into harbour that liberated Alderney in the Channel Islands. His most profound and harrowing event though was landing at Omaha beach on D Day along side the Americans. What he suffered and witnessed on that day (June 06th 1944) stayed with him until the day he died in 2017
I can no longer support my former serving family members, but there are many other former and current servicemen and women who still need support. We must also remember their families as well. From my own experience I know that the effects of warfare on individuals can impact significantly on all other family members.
I also served in the military (twice) during the 80s and 90s
