Carers Trust is a major charity for, with and about carers. We work to improve support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.

Story

Cycling the LEJOG End to End

Fundraising for The Carers Trust

To cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats has been a long term ambition of mine and now this rather daunting, but exciting, prospect is about to happen –  we start on Sunday 29 July.   What an undertaking – 1,000 miles in eleven days traversing Dartmoor, the Lake District and Glencoe before passing the Castle of Mey on the north coast of Scotland.

Son Edward will be back in the UK from Vietnam for 18 days and is devoting 11 of them to the challenge.   I couldn’t wish for a better companion.   Whilst my training has included rides from Bristol to Marlborough, Taunton, Leominster and regular trips over the Mendips to Wells, his training has been rather more exotic in Vietnam, Sulawesi and Bali.

Leaving Bristol on Sunday 29 July, we arrive at JOG on Wednesday 8 August with stops at Redruth, Crediton, Chew Magna, Shrewsbury, Bolton, Kendal, Moffat, Loch Lomond, Fort Augustus and The Crask Inn in the Highlands and after the first day, the daily average distance will be about 95 miles.

Many thanks to our various friends who are accommodating us en route and also to Dave “drummer” Payne who is very kindly driving a support vehicle for the central part of the ride.

We’re raising money for The Peter Westropp Memorial Trust which many of you know is a cause extremely close to our hearts.   Peter quite enjoyed cycling and was a regular participant on the Action 100 Bike Ride from Bath to London during the 1990’s but often fell off and rarely finished.  The Reading Festival, which occurred over the same weekend, provided the perfect excuse.

To date the PWMT has raised £197,000 so we are on target to reach £250,000 by 2021.   For this event our target is £5,000 and with your support we will get there which will make all the training, neck-ache, arse-ache and leg-ache worthwhile.   Thank you so much!
