Story
Is there any family where no one is affected by Alzheimer or other forms of dementia?
On 20 August of this year, I lost my dad after he had suffered from dementia for several years. It was hard seeing my strong, independent father lose the ability to express himself, to keep control of his life, and eventually even lose the touch with his family - in the end, he was not able to recognise us any more. My dad, who had inspired my love for nature, taught me about flowers and birds, and with whom I had enjoyed so many wonderful hikes through the Alps, had lost all these lovely memories that I still cherish.
Dad was not alone. Dementia is affecting the lives of countless sufferers and their loved ones. That's why this October, I will run the York Marathon for the Alzheimer's Society, the UK's leading dementia charity. They not only provide information and support, but also fund research and work towards a more dementia-friendly society where people with the condition can get live better lives.
I hope you will support me. It does not have to be much - every penny counts!
