The Sickle Cell Society is the only national charity in the UK that supports and represents people affected by a sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life.

Sickle cell is a disorder of the haemoglobin in the red blood cells, the substance that is responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. People with sickle cell have sickle-shaped red blood cells which can cause blockages and cause episodes of severe pain. People suffering with sickle cell disorder, often need regular blood transfusions and require regular pain management. This can help prevent crisis, treat anaemia and other severe symptoms such as strokes and early mortality. 

15,000 people in the UK have sickle cell. We have chosen to fundraise for the Sickle Cell Society as Fabian from the Risk and Compliance team is personally affected by Sickle Cell Disorder.

He said "I’m fortunate in that I don’t experience the severity of the condition in the way that many others do, for example regular blood transfusions and constant episodes of extreme pain. I have benefited from the support services the charity offer in the past. Sickle cell is an invisible condition that often goes overlooked."

The Sickle Cell Society believes that individuals with sickle cell have the right to quality care. This can only be achieved if funding is made available to educate health carers and other professionals about the condition. 

Donations from the public and fundraising activities are also part of their life support. Without them, they would be unable to finance the essential research and educational projects and they would be unable to offer children a much-needed holiday. The society benefits from the support of a wide range of individuals and organisations nationally, who together play a vital role in its success.
