On the 7th of November 2010, I have the privilige of competing in the "Puma Hellrunner", 12-mile half-marathon round Delamere Forest, as self-appointed team captain for "The Fat Knackers Club". Running with me are a number of mates from St Helens and Preston, who hope to enjoy the experience and raise as much money for charity as we can. (Please click 'read more' below)

Raising funds for the British Kidney Patients Association has been an ambition of mine since my friend Peter's death on the 27th of December 2003, when he was aged 36. As a Renal (kidney) patient, Peter was often very ill, but was an inspiration to his family, friends, even hospital staff and fellow patients, as he rarely let health issues get him down, and always wore a smile. 

Peter (or Pedro as I used to call him) once lent me a book called "Timbo", which was the very touching story about a boy with kidney failure. It was written by the wonderful lady who founded the BKPA whose son was the boy in the book.

Peter and I had been the very best of friends for over ten years. Six years my senior, he was pretty much like the older brother I never had. For those of you who knew him, I'm confident you'll all agree with me when I say he was one in a million, and also one of the coolest, nicest, funniest and loveliest human beings to have ever lived.

So please, if you can all spare a few bob for a good cause I would be delighted. I'm hoping to raise £500. If we surpass that then I'll be made up.

The British Kidney Patient Association (BKPA) is a UK registered charity, who work to improve the quality of life for adults and children with chronic kidney disease.

• Donations go towards grants to help patients and families with kidney disease, cover the costs of domestic bills, hospital travel, education and holidays.
