After being in Honduras for less than 24 hours, Tom had persuaded me I'd really like to run a 10k...(I think he has unrealistic dreams that one day we'll complete an Ironman together!) I very much have a love/hate relationship with running and whilst I happily enjoy a little pootle along by the sea, the idea of anything more than this makes me feel ill. However I have invested in a snazzy new pink and orange running watch, joined a running club and despite a lot of moaning and groaning I am very excited for this challenge! So on the 9th July I will be taking to the streets of London for the Westminster 10k!

Having worked at St Catherine's for nearly two years now, I have seen the huge impact it has on the lives of students and their families. They learn how to put words together to tell someone what they did at the weekend or that really exciting idea they have but just can't find the words for. They learn how to say new sounds so they can pronounce their own name. They learn how to take turns in a game and manage when they lose so they don't hurt their friends. They learn it's okay to feel cross or worried and how to let someone know how they are feeling. They learn to use apps on their phone so they can order an ice cream and be understood by people that don't know them. They learn how to read a bus timetable so that they can travel independently to the gym. They have the opportunity to practise making phone calls so they can book their own hair appointment or doctors appointment. They learn how to voice their opinion and indeed that they have an opinion that is valued.

I could ramble for a long time about the amazing work that goes on every day and the fantastic progress that is made, but I think the words of a student I work with say it so much better..."Here at St Catherine's I feel happy and so free, everyone understands me and knows how to help me. This school has changed my life."
