We return rare species back to the wild to provide a future for endangered animals

Story

I have been studying in South Africa and am in my last semester. On my last two trips to the UK I have been fortunate enough to volunteer at Port lymphne, it is there that I met Rosie and was inspired to provide her with a shelter.

Rosie is a 29-year-old Eastern Black Rhinoceros and soon to be 30. Like all rhinos, she has an amazing and unique personality. Rosie likes staying in her bedroom which is one of the reasons we want to raise money to build her an outdoor shelter. Usually one can use a rustling of the feed bags to coax one of these amazing animals out of their bedrooms’, but Rosie doesn’t like the sound that makes. She does come out into her paddock but as there is no shade she is not inclined to hang around outside for long. She is a very affectionate animal and likes to work with men however she has not calved with any rhinos, guess she likes playing hard to get. She will stand her ground in a tussle with any rhino she has shared an enclosure with and quite happy to see them off for any cheekiness.

Eastern Black Rhinoceros (Diceros Bicornis Michaeli)
Eastern Black Rhinoceros are a subspecies of Black Rhinoceros and are distinguishable by a more curved horn and more grooved skin. They are reportedly more aggressive than the other three subspecies of black rhino which does make them quite interesting to work with. Black rhinos are herbivorous browsers that eat leafy plants, branches, shoots, thorny wood bushes and fruit. They use their prehensile upper lip to strip leaves off branches and to help forage. Their preferred habitat is one consisting of thick scrub and bushland, often with some woodland.
