The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’ve decided to do the 7k for 700k for all of the children and adults in my personal and professional life with Autism who have inspired me on a daily basis.

I have met so many children who feel  ‘broken’ and ‘different’ due to the challenges they face in comparison to their peers.

I want to show my pupils that just because you do things differently, it doesn’t mean you are any less than anyone else or that you are broken.

Up until January 2020 I was a Special Educational Needs Coordinator and Special Needs Teacher. Unfortunately, just after New Years Day I ended up in hospital and was diagnosed with three degenerative spinal conditions that mean I can’t work with children in the same way anymore. I was and am absolutely devastated by this because I LOVE my job and the children I work with.

Luckily, I have  an incredible support network of friends, family and parents who have rallied behind me and helped me to set up my own Special Needs Education and Support Service called ‘Bloom Tutoring’.  In this way, I can still do what I love, with the children I love, but at my own pace and time.

Because of my condition I find it hard to walk for more than five minutes and can’t stand up for too long. I also can’t do CrossFit anymore or my favourite sport of running.

HOWEVER I CAN WALK. Just like many of my pupils and families, I have to do things a bit differently now but that’s ok. Like people with Autism, I have a challenge to face on a daily basis. I want to show my pupils that despite these challenges, I am still capable of wonderful things!

I’ll be doing my walk in small stages over the next few weeks and will be tracking my journey as I go.

I’m hoping that some of my pupils might join me too!

Please help me to raise awareness and support for adults and children on the Autism Spectrum and help them to realise that they have DIFFERENCES not DEFICITS.
