Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have this week been in A&E at the Royal Berks after my neighbour was ambulanced into hospital following a bad fall.
We arrived on, what I found out to be one of their busiest times, a Monday evening, where the waiting time was estimated at 3 hours, and there were no seats left in the waiting room. However you wouldn't have known it as the staff were amazingly efficient and calm. Reassuring all the patients who arrived, updating them, keeping them in the loop of their care and even checking those who accompanied them were ok and had eaten etc.
Something that struck me during our 6 hours there was how so many of the staff were scurrying around trying to get use of the ECG machine. The scenario that played out in front of me was of a nurse who had obtained the ECG turning round to her patient to prepare her, then turning back and the machine was gone, another nurse searching for the machine, then later our nurse achieving the ultimate in gaining use of the machine, just to find another pop her head around the curtain saying she needed it. With the words, "the patient is in resus" the machine was instantly given up and the priority given to the person who needed it most.
The staff in A&E were essentially being held up by the lack of access to an ECG machine. It transpired only one ECG machine is available to A&E. When that breaks down they have to beg and borrow from elsewhere in the hospital.
I would like to fundraise to get another ECG machine for A&E. I have found out very little fundraising happens for this department, often people who go to A&E are patched up and return home to recover, or are transferred on to another ward and if there is any fundraising to be carried out it is often the ward they move on to that is the focus of that patient's attention.
The staff worked so hard and were so incredibly caring. I would like to find a way to make their life easier, and maybe in turn more efficient to be able to cope with the sheer numbers that go through their doors each day.
Please help raise enough money for an extra ECG machine for A&E at the Royal Berks
Thank you
Fiona
