Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Rabies is a deadly disease which still affects over 60, 000 people yearly. Many of these people are vulnerable, those living in the poorest of areas, unable to afford or reach treatment and in particular, children. If no immediate treatment is sought, the disease often results in slow and painful death.

Mission Rabies is aiming to eliminate this disease. The goal this year is to control the disease with mass vaccination drives along with education in India, a Rabies hotspot where a third of all human deaths occur.

In September, I will be giving up my time to volunteer and become part of the Mission Rabies team out in Goa to help try and achieve this goal.

Coming from a country where lots of us live happily alongside many healthy dogs, we are very lucky as we do not have to worry about the threat of the Rabies disease. Therefore I cannot wait to make a difference with this project and help make a path for those in less fortunate places to be able to do the same.

Money raised will go into supplies, transport and education. It ensures that the team can continue to provide educational materials to many children and adults in areas where little is known about the disease and what can be done to prevent it. Just 50p can teach a child what to do to protect themselves against dog bites. It also allows vaccines to be distributed and given to those dogs both owned and stray. £25 will enable 100 dogs to be vaccinated against rabies for a whole year.

Mission Rabies is an amazing charity which I cannot wait to be a part of and see what we achieve this year. It has vaccinated over 120, 000 dogs since 2013 in both India and Africa, both of which are Rabies hotspots. I work as a registered veterinary nurse in England and cannot wait to head to Goa for this challenge and give something back to both people and animals less fortunate than myself.
