Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Even as I write this, I’m still not entirely sure I can do it, but nonetheless, I’ve set myself the challenge of completing my first half marathon.  I’ll be doing it to raise funds for The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in memory of our lovely friend Rachel Porter.

Rachel is missed so much, by so many people.  She was fun, caring, helpful, thoughtful, a little bit mischievous and someone I truly loved  spending time with.  It still seems unbelievable that cancer so quickly and terribly cruelly took Rachel from us in July last year.

I’m raising funds for the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice as, just like they did for Rachel, the hospice helps many people in terribly sad circumstances and supports families through those very tough moments that no one ever wants to imagine.

Earlier this year I started Couch to 5K and managed to complete that by the end of March.  After many days and nights of thinking what to do next, I took the plunge and signed up for the Glasgow Half Marathon due to take place on the 3rd of October.  Unfortunately, along with many events, the race was cancelled and with it went my training regime and enthusiasm for running.  But as the date draws nearer, and as I continue to think about Rachel, I’ve questioned why on earth I’m not just doing the run anyway to raise funds for this special charity...

So that’s what I’m going to do.  There will be no official time, no specific route, no water stations, no cheering crowds, and no medal to show for it.  I’ll just have to rely on Strava as proof and my iPhone for music to get me over the distance.

I’m aiming to do the half marathon on the weekend of Saturday 2nd or Sunday 3rd of October.  Actual start time and day will be dependent
on the kids’ sports commitments and their social life and I’ll also try to pick a decent slot in the weather!

If the torture of me or supporting the Hospice isn’t enough to persuade you to donate, it is also Rachel and Alan’s 13th wedding anniversary that weekend so why not donate the value of a bottle of fizz or your favourite red wine?

Finally, the 3rd is also my birthday, so any support to keep me going is hugely appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for your support.

Mags x
