Our team at Ellesmere Port Hospital have taken up the challenge to become ‘dementia-friendly’. Whilst members of our team have become dementia and dignity champions to improve dementia awareness, we’ve now turned our attention to the environment to see what improvements we can make that will make staying in hospital less disorientating and frightening. There are lots of ‘little’ things that we can do to make hospital more 'dementia friendly'. From using simpler signposting through to installing ‘orientation boards’ with a clock and the days of the week/month. We’re also looking to make some design changes, such as using contrasting colours around the ward such as for cutlery, crockery and tablecloths, and toilet seats, handrails that contrast with the rest of the bathroom.
To help raise funds towards this fantastic initiative, a team of 20 staff, friends and family will be attempting to cross the ‘Sport in the Port’ finish line on Sunday 16 June 2013. Those of us who are a little bit fitter will be completing the 10K course whereas the more sensible members of the team will be completing the 5K course, both of which take in the sights and sounds of Ellesmere Port!
