Story
In November 2013 Laurel / Mum / Granny (depending on which walker you ask!) suffered a stroke. This life changing event came from nowhere and had a huge impact on Laurel and our family. After months of rehabilitation Laurel's physical abilities improved considerably but her communication abilities remain less recovered, leaving her with significant aphasia.
"The difficulties Mum had speaking, reading, even saying our names were devastating, for her and us. Initially, after her discharge from the rehabilitation unit, it seemed this was a void that would not be filled. It was a frustrating and scary time as a family wondering how we were going to make it ok. Then, Mum was invited to go to Dyscover. She began attending regularly, she loved the meetings and found support from being with others with similar problems. She benefitted enormously from the expertise that the specialist speech therapists offer. Mum continues to attend Dyscover weekly and her and Dad have found the support invaluable. Mum is more confident and uses strategies for dealing with her aphasia. The consistency and long term nature of the support is imperative to its' success. This isn't a problem that is suddenly going to go away and it is harder to build quick relationships when you have communication difficulties"
This expert support undoubtedly comes at a cost. We are hoping we are able to raise much needed funds for a small but important charity.
