Ampleforth Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks who welcome visitors into the Abbey for services, and to explore the extensive and stunning Abbey grounds. History & Heritage The Abbey Church and Visitor Centre offer a fascinating insight into a living monastic community. Founded in 1802, the Benedictine community at Ampleforth Abbey is the largest community of monks in the UK. The Abbey Church is filled with furniture, sculpture, and glass from skilled crafts people, including local oak craftsman Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson. Retreats Our comfortable retreat facilities offer space to rest, reflect and relax away from the routine of everyday life. This place of prayer offers spiritual nourishment for those who seek it. All are warmly welcomed, whether part of a group, for a conference or your own personal retreat. Tea Room Home-made refreshments are available including hot meals and cakes, tea, coffee, and cold drinks including our Ampleforth Abbey apple juice and cider. Outside seating offers stunning views across the Ampleforth valley, and there is baby changing, children’s menu, and plenty of space to park buggies. Explore the Grounds The Ampleforth estate covers 1,200 acres of lakes and woodland in the Howardian Hills National Landscape, with the North York Moors National Park to the north. We welcome walkers and cyclists throughout the year.

Story

We are the SHACATHON People, students of Ampleforth College supporting Mary's Meals through Face-Faw, and through this Ampleforth Abbey Trust Justgiving page.  Thank you for visiting our SHACATHON JustGiving page.

We support Mary's Meals and in particular through Mary's Meals, we support Chigwaja Primary School in Malawi - trying to provide a meal each day for its 951 children. We ask you for sponsorship for these children through SHACATHON.

MARY's MEALS is an international movement that sets up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education - feeding now 1,101,206 children in 12 countries every school day and costing £12.20/$14.50 to feed a child for a year.  Ampleforth/Face-Faw needs £11,887 to feed 951 children at Chigwaja for one year - through SHACATHON.

In SHACATHON, collectively, we cycled, swam and ran the distance of 814,000 metres - that is 505.79 miles, the distance from Ampleforth to Paris, on Sunday 28 February 2016.  We cycled 301.98 miles [equivalent of Ampleforth to Dover], swam 21.75 miles [1400 lengths of the pool] (Dover to Calais) and ran 182.06 miles (Calais to Paris] - adding everyone together, 500 taking part. It took about three hours or a combined total of 48 hours, 31 minutes.

For each House, 50 took part - covering 50.57 miles - 20 cycling on machines in total 30.198 miles; 10 swimming 14 lengths each [in all 2.175 miles]; 20 running in total 18.20 miles.

We did all this at Ampleforth - cycling on machines and swimming, then running outside. 500 of us trying to support those who need food, providing meals for the children of Chigwaja Primary School in Blantyre in Malawi.

Please help us to support Mary's Meals.  For £12.20 you provide meals for one child at Chigwaja for one year.  Overall £11,887 provides meals for one year. If you could sponsor us with two children that means £24.40.

Donating to Mary's Meals via Face-Faw/Ampleforth Abbey Trust JustGiving Page is simple, it is fast and it is secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, Justgiving send your sponsorship money direct though Face-Faw/Ampleforth Abbey Trust to Mary's Meals. So it’s efficient, it works well we think.

In SHACATHON we are trying to feed those who are hungry.  Many of the children at Chigwaja will only eat this one meal each day.

SHACATHON is a Face-Faw event to support Mary's Meals.
