SHSB 9ST2 First Give Sleep out

William Imbush is raising money for HARP

SHSB 9ST2 First Give Sleep out · 6 March 2022

HARP is South Essex’s leading homelessness charity, supporting over 1,000 people each year with housing, advice and 1:1 help when life becomes unstable. Our role is to meet people where they are and offer support that acknowledges their situation, without judgement.

Story

HARP, Southend's homeless charity, helps local people overcome homeless for good. We provide access to accommodation, support and educational, confidence boosting activities to give local homeless people the best chance of leaving the streets behind. On average, we assist over 1,000 people every year who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. We rely on the fantastic support of the public to carry on with our work. Thank you for supporting HARP and helping us to change lives.

Year 9 started the First Give programme at the beginning of this term.

First Give supports students to learn about social issues in the community. Through the programme students choose charities that they want to support through social action. The programme is a competition and a panel of judges rate each form group based on their social action and presentations. The winning group wins £1,000 for their chosen charity.

The boys have been working through the programme during Form Time. As there has been more Form Time that we would usually have at this time of year, the boys have made fantastic progress. As a result, some of the boys have already started work on their social action.

Our form, 9ST2, have chosen to support HARP to help tackle the social issue of homelessness. Our social action that our boys have chosen is do is to camp outside in tents. This is aimed to raise awareness for those that are homeless and to raise money for HARP through family and friends sponsoring the students to spend the night in their gardens in a tent. It is great to see that over three quarters of the of the class have said that they are going to participate, with many of them choosing to group up with their friends. The school is lending out tents to the boys that have said they would like to borrow one to be able to partake in our social action.
