Snowdonia Charity Challenge · 2 July 2011

Regain is the only charitable organisation dedicated solely to improving the independence of all British men & women who have become tetraplegic as a result of a sporting or leisure accident. A tetraplegic is unable to walk and has limited reach & dexterity because use of the arms is severely impaired.

Story

Our Story

On the 8.55 to London on a crisp September morning the challenge was set to complete a 'Triathlon' - Cycling 20 miles a run up Snowdon and a gentle trott back down to hop on the saddle for another 20 miles to finally end up in a canoe to paddle to the finish. Hopefully in just less than 8 hours?!?

The event is raising money for REGAIN, the only organisation dedicated solely to supporting men and women who become tetraplegic (severely paralysed) as the result of a sporting accident. Many sporting careers have been cut short early due to such horrific injuries in rugby, diving, horse riding and cycling. We want to raise awareness of this and help give a better future.

And so the training starts......... We will give regular updates of progress made.... yes i know we have months but the knees are just not what they were.

January training update A planned trip to Snowdon and Brecon had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, so the '4 musketeers' settled on a 3 hour yomp up Cleeve Hill (hangovers in tow!!). The boys have been hitting the gym hard....... with only 150 days to go - the clocks ticking!!!!

February

As February draws to an end and spring comes upon us, the training has stepped up a gear. Buck has been training with Newts in the 'innit' gym Leicester whilst Jude and S have been working on saddle sores in Cheltenham. Looking forward to getting the real bikes out.

Disaster: Late February, Newts gets thrown off his bike as a car hits him on a roundabout. Bleeding, bruised and shaken Issac is out of training for 3 weeks. But worse his bike is write off. That is the law of gravity.

March

Spring arrives and training continues, light nights arrive and so we break out into cardio training, Isaac is feeling better after his accident, but Buck is yet to decide what bike is appropriate for the event! SP struggles with groin strain! Oh dear.

April

Easter break and a month of short weeks or long weekends! We were never going to be bothered about what dress was wheeling down the aisle instead we have been bothered about wheeling out the bikes, even Buck! So plenty of miles have been put in and the reality of how hard it is to start running after cycling 20miles has hit home. Running - its Snowdon up and down..... Training methods need to be rethought!

May

What a month, great training although bank holidays were dampened with rain thus putting a stop to the whole team getting together for practice run. Buck takes up swimming and Jude and S bust it at circuits. Newts just like Rocky is training alone doing three times as much as anyone else.

June

Disaster strikes: with only 4 weeks to go, Judith has managed to  break his arm, snapped after going AWOL in Holland. On a positive note Harry John was born so sleepless nights and less time is a great excuse for S to miss training. Newts brother Tom is to step on board, lets hope Jude can still do the run?

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT.... WE DID IT.... 6hrs 3mins - the fastest time out of the competing 39 teams! The biggest winner was the charity, a well organised event which hopefully will help many lives improve. Thankyou to everyone who sponsored us, it was motivational in training and at the top of Snowdon.
