We support childhood lower limb conditions to make a real difference

Story

I've always wanted to run the London Marathon and have entered the ballot for the past 8 years and have never been successful. The chance to run for a charity is always there but I didn't want to run for just any charity - I wanted to do it for one close to my heart and that really means something to me!

Two years ago, my wife and I had our first baby, a son, which was amazing! At 2 weeks old he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and put into a Pavlik harness. That was when we first became aware of STEPS the charity. The website and facebook page helped us find answers to the millions of questions and feelings we had and helped us remain strong while our new little baby boy was confined to this harness. It was comforting to hear of other first time parents going through the same turmoil as us. Finley's time in the harness was difficult but with the support of our family, friends, hospital staff and STEPS we got through it and after 12 weeks it was removed and he was free to bathe, swim, kick his legs and finally wear normal clothes and shoes. His 1 year check up wasn't so positive and we were told to return in 6 months for a follow up x-ray. This we did and we were then referred to the see the specialists at the Royal London Hospital. At 20 months old we were informed that Finley will have to have surgery on his hip and faces 6-12 weeks in a spica cast. What is most frustrating is that from looking at him you can see no problem whatsever, he runs, swims & jumps around like any other 2 year old so to know what we need to put him through to help him in later life is heartbreaking. We know it is for the best but at 2 years old, he's never going to understand. We know after this operation hopefully he'll be sorted for life and will no longer suffer with hip problems but you just never know. We also know how incredibly lucky we are, to be blessed with such a happy, energetic, clever, beautiful baby boy!

The STEPS website and various publications have helped us come to terms and prepare for Finley's operation which is scheduled for January 2019. I'll be honest until Finley was diagnosed I'd not heard of STEPS before so I am determined to raise awareness of this amazing charity and the work they do for children who are born with lower limb conditions. Every training run, every training meal, every fundraising event and that all important race day will have so much meaning, purpose and drive for me so please donate what you can. Thank you x
