A Sponsored Head Shave · 30 November 2013

At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.

Story

Next Saturday 30th November 2013 at 1pm, during the fun day at Barkerend Primary School,  Jules Greenway and I will be having our heads shaved to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee in aid of the Philippines Typhoon Appeal

As super storm Haiyan battered the Philippines, several charities mobilised their teams and emergency supplies so they could quickly reach the most vulnerable.

Haiyan was a category five storm packing winds of up to 195 mph along with extremely heavy rainfall and a dangerous storm surge. Category five is the strongest possible typhoon and meteorologists believe Haiyan could be the most powerful storm to ever make landfall.

The DEC brings 14 leading UK aid charities together in times of crisis: Action Aid, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision; all collectively raising money to reach those in need quickly.

We only appeal when we know we can help. These are the three key questions we ask 1) Does the scale and urgency of the disaster call for decisive action? 2) Are our member agencies in a position to provide effective and swift humanitarian assistance? 3) Will the public support us?

Once we decide, we act. The DEC alerts the Rapid Response Network (RRN) a unique alliance of the UK’s corporate and broadcasting sectors, to reach the British people through all channels of the media
