Story

In early June, a team of 5 Merseyrail staff (including Helen Hodgkinson, Legal and Compliance Manager; Paul Collins, Project Engineer; Cathy Murphy, Health and Wellbeing Manager; Sylvia Hayes, Guard and Steve Abernethy, Station Facilities Manager will embark on their 5th Charity walk.  The challenge is to complete the spectacular 100K St Cuthbert’s Way.  The walk runs between Melrose, on the Scottish borders to Holy Island on the Northumberland coast.  The team are aiming to complete the walk in three and half days.

The team (known as the Goonies) started walking for the Merseyrail charities 5 years ago to support Paul Collins, who tragically lost his wife to cancer at the young age of 38 years. Each year since, the team has supported the Merseyrail charity of the year by completing a challenging walk. They have raised in excess of £45k through their commitment and dedication to our charities.

On all these events they have been supported by Paul Danisz, a contractor, who has worked with Merseyrail on several projects but more importantly has been an integral part of the support team. Paul not only gives his time to Merseyail free of charge he is a committed volunteer who supports Help for Heroes and Race across America. It’s hard to explain what Paul has done for our team and how the team appreciates his help and support. Recently, the team faced a difficult dilemma after hearing the very sad news that Paul has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. They even considered cancelling this year’s walk. However, they have decided to complete the walk in honour of Paul’s charity work especially because of all the help and support he has given.

Any donation is most welcome for this worthy cause.   We will recognise any of our partners who are able to help us to cover any of the costs to allow the Goonies to complete this great challenge. On behalf of the team and ‘The Kitty’, I hope that you will be able to support our efforts and we look forward to sharing the success with you.
