Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page...

In 2019 at a friends wedding I started to experience severe chest pains somewhat out of nowhere. Once the pain passed I didn't think too much in to it and carried on as normal.  A few days later I finished a football game and the pains came back even worse so I headed off to A&E to get checked out.  Expecting to be home that evening I was kept in hospital for several days whilst doctors tried to establish the root cause of these pains only to be told that scans showed that I’d had a minor heart attack…

After several visits to a specialist in Bristol I was diagnosed with Myocarditis and was off all forms of exercise for six months.

What is Myocarditis?

Myocarditis means inflammation of the heart muscle.  In the UK one young person dies suddenly each week due to undiagnosed myocarditis.  It can affect anyone at any age and is usually related to a recent viral infection.

Recently, COVID-19 has seen an increase in myocarditis cases in the UK.

With limited to no information available on this inflammatory condition Myocarditis UK have pledged to raise a minimum of £80,000 per year to fund vital research into finding better cures and treatments for myocarditis.

Currently diagnosis is challenging as there are no specific blood tests that can detect myocarditis.  My diagnosis took several weeks of numerous MRI scans, blood tests and coronary angiograms.

Early detection and better treatment are key priorities supported by the Alexander Jansons Myocarditis UK and their hope is to find better treatments and enable much earlier diagnosis.

In October 2023, I will be running my first competitive Half Marathon in Bath with the aim of raising awareness & much needed funds to support Myocarditis UK.

About the charity

Myocarditis kills one young person suddenly every week in the UK. We aim to raise awareness and fund life changing research into this little known heart condition so that it can be detected and diagnosed earlier and successfully treated to improve the outcome.
