Sam's Year of Fundraising for the Climate Emergency

Sam's Year of Fundraising for the Climate Emergency · 9 November 2020
In the run up to COP26 in Glasgow in November 2020, I want to highlight the climate emergency facing us globally and locally.
I'll be taking part in a series of fundraising challenges, one each month, with the goal of raising funds but also raising awareness.
Each challenge will be tied to a climate theme, and we'll do a little bit of learning along the way.
January 1st - the Loony Dook. I'll be jumping into the freezing cold waters of South Queensferry alongside hundreds of others and discussing the impact climate breakdown is having on marine and bird species
February - living minimalist. I will attempt to limit what I buy over the whole month, to see the fundamental changes we will need to make to our habits to have the monumental shift in attitudes on a global scale
March - Goatfell hike. Islands are fragile landscapes and globally we are already seeing species vanish from them, sea levels rise and coasts erode. We'll take a birds eye view of Scotland in miniature to think about the future of islands
April - Bungee Jump in Pitlochry. We'll visit Killiecrankie to see the forests of Perth shire, and think about these amazing wildernesses are being impacted by climate change
May - Ben Nevis hike. Climate change will have a devastating impact on our geology, changing the Highlands forever. This will have a massive impact on the species existing in this already harsh environment
June - Coast to Coast cycle. Cycling from West to East, we'll discuss the changing landscape of Scotland and how we can already see the changes and impacts along the way
July - the West Highland Way. I'll take on the biggest one right in the middle of the year. Tackling the 96 mile trek from Milngavie to Fort William. I'll highlight the species we see along the way and watch as the lowlands becomes the Highlands
August - the rice and beans diet. Food insecurity already affects over 900 million people globally, and the climate crisis will only make this harder. The global south will be hit first before the affluent countries like Scotland experience it. So I'll spend a week on a minimum diet of rice and kidney beans
September - Arran coastal walk. I'll walk around the whole coast of Arran over a few days.
October - the Great Scottish Run. Union St in Glasgow is one of the most polluted streets in Europe, so we'll go on a run around the city and highlight what needs to be done to improve the air quality and reduce pollution
And then we will see the arrival of COP26 in Glasgow in November 2020.
