Mission Direct is a Christian charity that offers short-term overseas volunteering trips. It takes volunteers from the UK to work on community development projects around the world. Projects include helping to build and decorate school classrooms, low-cost homes and refuges.

Story

Hello people! This is a money raising scheme like you have never seen it before!

My name is Sam. If you know me in person, you will know that I am currently a final year medical student. Later on in the year I must undertake a medical elective which involves studying abroad. Instead of sitting on a beach in Barbados for 5 weeks and occasionally going to clinics, I decided to do something worthwhile- where I could actually make a difference. I came across a charity called Mission Direct and quickly signed up.

In May 2011 I will be going to Uganda for 2 weeks in order to help and teach medical staff in deprived areas. Now- we have all whined about how rubbish the NHS is at one point or another. How we have long waiting lists, or how quality of care is poor. A lot of the treatments we have access to here are not even available in Uganda. They do not nearly have enough doctors or nurses to cope with the problems they are facing.

I do however need to raise £1500 for this. All money raised will go directly to the project. So I began to think- I need a classical sporting event for which I could raise money. If you know me, you also know that I love exercise and therefore thought I need a challenge. I came across the 'Thoughguy' event and thought it was a worthy one!

Thoughguy is basically a half marathon in a muddy valley through many army style obstacle courses and lakes (which are usually frozen over). Its quite dangerous. See this video- it explains all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9dep7RKVVA. Through doing Toughguy, I need to raise money for one of their charities- of which I have chosen to be spinal research. In true toughguy style, they stipulate that half of the money I raise must go to their charity and half to my own. So I basically need to raise £3000!

I only have until very early January to raise a minimum of £1500. It is not going to be easy. I need your help!

I know you probably get dozens of people pestering you all of the time saying that they are doing ANOTHER marathon for a random charity. Yes, I am raising money for a charity that you probably don't know anything about. However I do need to get to Uganda and I really do want to make a personal difference. I will being doing things that will change lives directly. Please forward this on to anyone and everyone who may be able to donate. If you simply turn your head away, it will not happen.

Thanks guys/gals,

Sam
