Story

My Father served in the 1st Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment.

I distinctly remember when they deployed as part of the UN Peacekeeping mission to Bosnia. This operation is often not talked about by the press but saw British Forces impose themselves between the two warring parties.

Corporal Wayne Mills from Alma Company won the Battalion their first Conspicuous Gallantry Cross in Gorazde, he led his patrol to safety after initially being ambushed in the hills above the town by Bosnian Serb forces, killing several of them as he did so and as The Dukes sought to impose themselves between the warring parties to prevent the genocide, which would undoubtedly have occurred, in the same way it did in Srebenica months later when 8,000 unarmed males were slaughtered.

Before departing Bosnia a memorial was built, since then it has been removed. There is an intent to build a British Army Memorial Park to recognise the service of all those who served but specifically the 6 soldiers who dies from The Dukes, the SAS and The Royal Gloucester, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment (RGBW)

The hope is to raise enough funds to pay not only for the DWR share of the memorial costs, but also to refurbish and dedicate a classroom at the school in Shaun’s name and memory. The children of the school will also be directly responsible for maintaining the memorial to the fallen on the 3 Regimental Days of the units that suffered fatalities there. The project is called “Honour & Inspire 2022” and is being organised by a UK registered charity called GCF Bosnia (www.gcfbosnia.org).
