Last year I bought a road bike in an attempt to improve my fitness and soon discovered the joys and challenges of road cycling. My father, a keen cyclist, tried to convince me in my teens that cycling was the sport for me. Some 25+ years later I am in the saddle - at least he can say I heed his advice, if not always immediately!  I should add that learning to ride with clipless pedals (like a pro – I wish!) resulted in some spectacular falls and a physio remarking with great amusement that I am the only patient to damage a ligament whilst riding a bike!

Rather than embarking on a cycling holiday I decided to join the 4-day to Paris Cycle Ride and raise funds for the British Skin Foundation.  The BSF is the only national charity that supports and funds research into all skin conditions. Skin disease affects up to a quarter of the population and now accounts for more GP visits than any other group of diseases.  Many chronic skin diseases are incurable and can kill if severe enough.  In 2008, almost 4000 people died from a skin disease in the .
