Story
After a heart-breaking year my friend Emma and I have decided to push ourselves to the limits.
As most of you know I sadly lost my older brother, Anthony Todd, in May 2018 at the mear age of 34. He had an infection in his foot and became seriously ill which landed him in hospital for over a week before his passing. This however did not, directly, cause his death, he suffered a sudden heart attack. Despite the efforts of the NHS they were unable to revive him.
See Anthony had diabetes, like most of my family. My father had it any my little sister was diagnosed at age 9. Most people think, on hearing diabetes, that they couldn’t eat sugar. Although this is a very big contributor this is only a small section of this terrible, incurable condition.
After Anthony passed I made an effort to look into the actual effects diabetes has on a individuals life, I was astounded. Even though I grew up in a diabetic household and being diagnosed with gestational diabetes in both of my pregnancies, what I actually knew about diabetes wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg.
This condition can effect a person’s life in every possible way, from the food they eat, the weather outside and even the people around them. Blood sugars can be effected by the slightest little thing and like I said this is only a small part.
What I was most shocked about, was the lack of education around diabetes and the seriousness of the consequences of not having the correct care or education in place.
I am making it my mission to help raise money for Diabetes UK to help give those the chances my brother sadly did not get.
Diabetes UK is the charity leading the fight against the most devastating and fastest growing health crisis of our time, creating a world where diabetes can do no harm. Its a fight that involves all of us sharing knowledge and taking diabetes on together.
