I am going to ATTEMPT to swim Lake Ullswater 11.8 K on
Saturday 22nd September in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance
following my cycling accident last year.
I grew up in this area with my mum running the hire boats at Pooley Bridge. I spent my childhood at the water’s edge. My mum drilling into us the dangers of the lake with its deep sudden drops, cold temperature and currents, hence my unease swimming in open water.
Ullswater is 11.8K and the water temperature is around….. I have roped in two friends Karoline Rose who will swim the first section with me Glenridding to Howtown and then I will be joined by Claire Horn… If I make it that far from Howtown to Pooley Bridge. Although we are all strong and competent swimmers we have not trained for this. The largest distance I have swam 3.8 K this year, not only is this a challenge because we have not built our
distance but the dropping lake temperatures after such a hot summer makes hypothermia a real risk. We are being supported by boat and land to ensure our safety.
Why am I doing this? That’s a great question, as a little girl I always wanted to swim the lake but I was too scared I now compete in triathlons and swim regularly in the lake.
Last August I was fell of my bike causing a head injury, fractured skull,
brain injury, fractured ribs, a lacerated spleen, arterial bleed from my head and major bruising to my left side. I was air lifted to Preston Hospital. I was fortunate enough to be with 4 friends at the time who saved my life. And this year although I have been lucky
enough to return to triathlon and even competed at Age Group for my country in the European Sprint Distance Championships I haven’t yet returned to full fitness and so set myself a special challenge for the end of 2018 season and raise money for a great cause.
