Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On August 11th 2018 team twentysix are walking 24.5 miles across the Yorkshire 3 Peaks to raise awareness for the genetic condition 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a disorder which impacts1 in 4,000 people. It's caused by the deletion of a piece of chromosome 22.

Many children and adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome have developmental delays, including delayed growth and speech development, and learning disabilities. Later in life, they are at an increased risk of developing mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Additionally, effected children are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorders that impact their communication and social interaction skills.

Raising awareness of 22q11.2 deletion is crucial to fund further research into how the condition affects individuals, and also to provide new therapies and methods of coping with various disabilities.

Also, most importantly, to educate society that you shouldn't judge a person by their disabilities or external conditions. We're all the same and in today's world be comfortable and brave enough to say its #oktonotbeok.

You can read more about my story with 22q and why they're our chosen charity this year here: https://blog.twentysixdigital.com/culture/22q11-2-what-it-is-what-it-does-and-why-we-care/

All the money raised through this event will be going directly to the Max Appeal who are a UK registered charity supporting families affected by 22q11.2 deletion, DiGeorge syndrome and VCFS.
