Fan Dance · 1 October 2016

Embrace Child Victims of Crime (CVoC) is a national children’s charity that focuses all its time on helping children, young people and families recover from the effects of crime. Our specialist services help them recover from their trauma, rebuild their lives and help them on their healing journey.

Story

On Saturday 1st of October, Captain (retd) Bobby Lush and Captain (retd) Phil Hermon from CME Group will lead myself and a few select other victims on a trek across the Brecon Beacons for the children’s charity Embrace.

The infamous “Fan Dance”, one of the most gruelling marches on SAS selection. The route travels for 24km long over two sides of Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Over the course of the day we will climb and descend a total of 1283m, (200m higher than Snowdon from the sea).

Starting at the iconic the Storey Arms the route goes straight up to the summit checkpoint of Pen Y Fan and, after descending 'Jacob's Ladder', continues along an undulating stone vehicle track (the 'Roman Road') to the turnaround point. Then, taking the route in reverse, you climb back up "The Fan" via Jacob's ladder and pass through the summit a second time before running back down to the finish at the Storey Arms.

The route is a real lung buster that throws everything at you, including the elements! There are steady slopes, very steep inclines that have you almost on your hands and knees, loose stone tracks that require cautious foot placements and a forested vehicle track. Even SAS recruits at the height of their physical abilities regard beating the clock in this event as a serious challenge, and all know its capacity to hurt. Just getting to the end is an accomplishment.

Thank you for your support!
