This Summer, a group from Cardiff University are volunteering with Mothers of Africa and Orkidstudio on an ongoing project to build Shiyala Primary School in the district of Chongwe, Zambia.
The project build began in 2016 and was opened to pupils the same year. So far, 6 classrooms have been completed along with 2 teachers' houses, 6 solar assist toilets, teachers' toilets and a library. Still to be built are 3 further classrooms, a disabled toilet, a playground and a teachers' office.
Why are we doing this? As Mothers of Africa have stated: "In sub-Saharan Africa, pregnancy and childbirth complications are the 2nd highest cause of death for girls aged 15 to 19 - No woman should die while giving life. Through education and improved healthcare infrastructure, the maternal mortality rate is greatly decreased."
"Also, fewer than 1 in 5 girls make it to secondary school. Our aim is to continue to support the education of women, adolescent girls, children and healthcare workers to protect and empower the future Mothers of Africa."
"Without this vital education, they cannot take control of their own lives, their own health"
In order to fund further projects run by Mothers of Africa, I shall be supporting them through running the Cardiff Half Marathon, any donations will go directly to them and will be greatly appreciated!
A little more about Mothers of Africa:
Saving the lives of women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa by implementing education and infrastructure.
We achieve this by structuring and delivering education programmes for healthcare providers and local people and constructing buildings which support our initiatives.
It is important that we collaborate closely with local communities and local government to achieve sustainable outcomes.
We ensure all our projects are an integrated part of the communities they serve and we have exit strategies which enable them to become independent.
