Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page its much appreciated and please know your money will be going to a fantastic cause.

The Event - Marathon Des Sables - Self Sufficient 250km 6 day race across the Saraha Desert

Marathon Des Sables - the stuff of legendary tales! Described by many as the toughest footrace on Earth!

The race is over six days and I will run over 250km (156 miles) through the Sahara Desert. The endless dunes, rocky jebels, and white-hot salt plains stand between the start and finish of the race.

The race is in April 2019 and temperatures regularly reach 50 centigrade. The race is self-sufficient meaning I will need to carry 6 days of food and bedding (sleeping bag). Over the 6 painful days, I will be running an average of a marathon a day, day 4 being 85km (two regular marathons). At the end of each day, I and 1200 other participants, will be camping in the desert.

This truly is the hardest race I have ever considered and will by far be my greatest physical challenge.

The Cause - Sightsavers

I am putting myself through pain to raise money for Sightsavers. If you have not heard of Sightsavers before the below will be beneficial.

Nearly 75% of the world's blind are avoidably so. Avoidable blindness is defined as blindness which could be either treated or prevented by known cost-effective means. Cataracts are thought to cause up to 60% of blindness in parts of Africa.

Sightsavers prevent sight loss and avoidable blindness in some of the poorest parts of the world by treating conditions such as cataracts and fighting debilitating eye diseases.

Their vision is of a world where avoidable blindness has been eliminated, and people with visual impairments and other disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Since 1950 they have completed 6.9 million cataract operations, trained 224k people with disabilities to help them earn a living and distributed 1 billion treatments to prevent debilitating diseases.

By donating to this cause you will be helping restore the sight of someone who is currently in darkness, unable to see their loved ones.
