Story
I am proud to say
I will be running all 26.2 miles of the Virgin London Marathon on behalf of the wonderful charity Stonewall: the
UK and Europe’s largest Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual equality charity;
which you all probably know from their famous ‘SOME PEOPLE ARE GAY. GET OVER
IT!’ campaign.
Here’s the reasons I think you should dig deep and donate…
In the 25 years of Stonewall’s service to our community, great things have been
achieved. Stonewall have played a huge part in securing UK legislative changes for
LGBT equality. Examples of this include the repeal of Section 28, the equalisation of
the age of sexual consent, and most recently their huge victory in implementation
the ‘Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act’ 2013.
Stonewall is a charity close to my heart. Your donations are hugely important,
as despite the immense changes I’ve already told you about, there are many more
left to address.
76 countries around the world still have
laws that make being gay illegal, and 5 will still punish homosexuals with
death. 75,000 British teenagers will be bullied in 2014 for ‘being gay’;
causing 21,000 of them to attempt to commit suicide. 450,000 LGBT people will also be a victim of a physical or verbal hate crime this year in the UK alone. Homophobia like this is globally
endemic, but with the aid of organisations such as Stonewall it can all be
overcome – as Yazz and her Plastic Population would say, ‘The Only Way is Up!’
